Picking and Storage Tips

  • Color: Look for a deep golden-yellow color on the peach's skin, especially towards the stem. Avoid peaches with green undertones, which suggests they are not yet ripe.

  • Feel: If the peach is firm to the touch, it’s not ready. Wait until there is some “give” when it is gently squeezed. Never squeeze too hard- it will result in bruising! Note: Choose slightly firmer peaches if you plan to store them for a few days, as they will continue to ripen after being picked.

  • Ease of picking: A ripe peach will separate from the tree easily. If it requires force, leave it on the tree to ripen further.

  • Handle gently: Peaches bruise easily, so handle them with care during picking and transport.

  • Don't overstack: Avoid piling peaches too high in your basket or container, as the weight can cause bruising.

  • Ripening at home: Peaches will continue to ripen after being picked. Store them at room temperature, ideally in a single layer on newspaper or paper towels, away from direct sunlight.

  • Slow down ripening: If you need to slow down the ripening process, store them in the refrigerator, where they should keep for about five days.

  • Plan your eating: Consider when you'll be eating the peaches and pick accordingly. Choose softer peaches for immediate consumption and firmer ones if you want to enjoy them over a few days.
